Consider a photography class. Learning from a professional will give you a real leg up in your picture taking abilities. But there is another option. You can join a photographic society. These clubs are common in many medium and large cities. Dues are minimal, and you can go on field trips with the club members, learning from a whole group of avid enthusiasts with like interests.
Package your services with the client in mind. For example, one photographer I have used offers a "Baby's First Year" package that starts with a maternity session before the baby is born, then sessions for the baby as a newborn, then again at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and one year. The package is one set price, and you get a print from each session and a collage print after the one year session is completed. Some photographers also offer a la carte sheets and items you can purchase in addition to their package deals.
Remember, it doesn't take much to transform a humdrum snapshot into a great image. Just take as many photographs as you can, tweaking as you go and you will soon have a stunning still life masterpiece.
